Entry-level Coach

This is the first stage of coaching education. It involves four generic modules, two of which are online, and two on-snow sport specific courses, followed by logged shadow hours. The stage of the CDP caters towards development-level athletes.

Sports generic modules

Our sports generic modules for the Entry-level Coach are designed to provide an insight into the theories and practices of coaching, and the necessary grounding on which to build further skills and experience.

Online Module 1

STILL IN DEVELOPMENT. This first Online Module will focus on coaching ethics.

Online Module 2

STILL IN DEVELOPMENT. This second Online Module will focus on coaching theory.

NZ Coach Approach and Leadership

NZ Coach Approach is a philosophical approach that promotes athlete-centered learning. This one-day workshop presented by the New Zealand Academy of Sport South Island focuses on the ‘How To’ of effective coaching.

Sports First Aid

Any current, NZ recognised first aid qualification will be valid here. However if you do not hold a current first aid certificate, you must complete one before you attend the on-snow courses.

Sport specific modules

Once the sports-generic modules have been completed to may sit on-snow coaching courses that are specific to you sport. At this stage we just have ski and snowboard courses available, however more sports are in the pipeline.

NZSIA/SBINZ Level One Instructor Certification

The Level One Certification is the entry-level instructor’s course aimed at people interested in joining the snow sports industry. A Level One Ski or Snowboard Instructor is certified to teach beginner and advanced-beginner skiers (class levels one and two). Whilst coaches may not be planning on teaching beginners to ski or snowboard, the theories and teaching skills you learn from this course are invaluable.

NZ Coach Level One

This is the last course in the first stage of ski or snowboard coaching in New Zealand. It is designed to educate and develop participants in becoming effective at coaching development level skiers and snowboarders. As an Entry-level Coach you will specialise in either skiing or snowboarding.

Logged shadow hours

As an almost-qualified Entry-level Coach, you now have to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in a practical situation. This is done through the process called ’shadowing’, where by you spend a 25 hours with a more senior coach (minimum one level above), whilst he or she is working with their athletes.
